The Click

Music has to click for me. If it doesn’t click then I don’t listen. Last night, I listened to Grizzly Bear’s album Shields. I had never listened to them before. About thirty seconds into the first song I felt the click. It’s like a light bulb chain being pulled and voilà - there was light.

I’ve never been one to force myself through music. It seems that many people will listen to an album because it comes highly recommended or is receiving great praise. Even when they don’t like the music as a whole, they’ll try to pick out a song or two that they can listen to and resist the urge to turn it off. They do this so they can say they liked something. I don’t really understand the thinking behind this.

I’ll give an example - Modest Mouse’s song “Float On”. If you’ve ever been to a Modest Mouse concert in which “Float On” was on the set list, you’ll notice after the song is played that usually a dozen or more (depending on crowd size) will just leave. Whenever Modest Mouse is playing a concert, Twitter search “Float On”. If they didn’t play it then you’ll see many tweets bemoaning the fact that the song wasn’t played. I read a tweet in which someone asserted that the band thought that they were “too good” for the song that made them “famous”.

Then there’s a band like Coheed and Cambria. Their biggest song is easily “Welcome Home”. Now, Coheed has realized the popularity of the song’s extend beyond their core fan base. As such, they’ve smartly played the song at every single concert since the song was released. I can only imagine the reaction of certain concert goers if the song was not played.

I’m not saying I’ve never heard a song that I liked but then found the artist’s other material to not be as engaging. With me, however, that is very rare. In the vast majority of cases when I hear a song that I like then I end up liking the artist’s other material. That isn’t always the case. For example, when I first heard fun.’s “We Were Young” I enjoyed it. Then I checked out the rest of Some Nights. I couldn’t stomach any of the other songs.

Then again, “We Were Young” didn’t have “the click”. I enjoyed it on the surface but I didn’t feel the click. The click is hard to describe I guess. It’s almost like when I feel the click that I know that anything else I listen to from an artist I’ll love. Sometime’s I don’t get the click right away. It might even take a second song to get that click. If I’m halfway through a record and I still don’t have the click then I’m not going to bother. I need that intense feeling I get from the click. I can’t just listen to music on the surface or as background music. I can’t just pretend to like something I don’t. I can’t even pretend to partially like something. It’s all or nothing.
